In 50 words or less, introduce yourself:
I’m a 21 year old sports science student from Kerry, Ireland. I play Gaelic football which is our national game, and have a strong interest in all sports. I also enjoy traveling and videography.
Why did you choose to become an intern at SRA?
When I came across the SRA website I was immediately intrigued by the wide range of services along with the emphasis on their high performance culture. After chatting with Shaun through zoom, I was certain that his knowledge and guidance would be invaluable for my career progression.
Provide us with a short summary of your roles and responsibilities:
I wrote programs, helped out with coaching sessions, athlete workshops, performance testing days and was also provided an opportunity to be a Sports Trainer with a local football club.
Additionally, admin duties included weekly monitoring of athlete sessions and readiness, recording NBL1 athletes stats, creating the lifts leaderboard, assisting with many google sheet files and plenty of spontaneous trips/meetings all across Victoria (& Walking Cleo).
What are the top three lessons you learnt:
- Average coaches do average things
- Be 1% better every day
- Eat the frog analogy
What were the biggest challenges you faced?
Initially, adapting to the professional environment was challenging as I had no previous experience in this setting. I also found coaching large groups challenging, keeping everyone engaged & adapting exercises to suit their needs.
With the support of SRA, I was able to learn how to navigate my way around these settings and become a better coach because of it.
What are you most proud of achieving?
Getting out of my comfort zone & growing in confidence both as a coach and as an individual.
If you could give any advice to future interns what would it be?
Be proactive, curious, & ask questions. you will only get out what you put in! No better person to learn from than Shaun.
Have you sold your bike yet?
Despite much doubt from Shaun, I did in fact sell my bike.
What was the final coffee count and who was the winner?
After a tough battle I’ve graciously accepted my 14-11 defeat to Shaun 🙁
What will you miss most about SRA?
Being part of such a close knit community of like-minded athletes and accompanying Shaun to various sporting events such as The Australian Opals Olympic Qualifying Camp, many NBL/WNBL events and even local level sporting events is what I will miss the most.
